Social Media Policy

STRATHMORE & DISTRICT MINOR BASEBALL ASSOCIATION (SMBA)

Social Media Policy

1. Introduction

a. This policy applies to all forms of online communication, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), TikTok, Threads, Snapchat, YouTube, LinkedIn, and any other platforms that allow public or private communication and sharing.

b. The policy applies to all members of the SMBA community — including Board Members, Coaches, Managers, Umpires, Players, Parents, Guardians, and Supporters — whether they are posting on behalf of SMBA or in a personal capacity that can be associated with SMBA.

2. Purpose

SMBA recognizes that social media is a valuable tool for promoting baseball and building community engagement. However, inappropriate use can harm individuals, teams, and the reputation of the association.
This policy outlines expectations for respectful and responsible online behavior.

3. Guidelines for Use

a. Represent the Association Positively
Members are expected to act as ambassadors of SMBA at all times, both on and off the field. Comments or posts should reflect the values of respect, sportsmanship, and integrity.

b. Think Before You Post
Social media is public and permanent. Once something is posted, it can be shared widely and quickly. If you wouldn’t say it in a public meeting or to the media, don’t post it online.

c. Respect Confidentiality
Do not post or share personal information, private conversations, team strategies, disciplinary actions, or any confidential matters relating to SMBA or its members.

d. Be Respectful
Disrespectful, abusive, harassing, or discriminatory content directed at any player, coach, umpire, board member, or association will not be tolerated.

e. No Unauthorized Representation
Only authorized SMBA representatives may operate official SMBA social media pages or speak on behalf of the association. Teams wishing to create social pages must obtain board approval.

f. Report Concerns
If you see inappropriate or harmful social media activity connected to SMBA, report it to a Board Member immediately.

4. Examples of Violations

The following actions are prohibited and may result in disciplinary action:

  • Public criticism or negative comments about SMBA, its officials, coaches, or volunteers

  • Sharing confidential or misleading information

  • Posting or sharing photos, videos, or comments involving:

    • Bullying, harassment, or threats

    • Drug or alcohol use

    • Hazing or sexual content

    • Discrimination, racism, or hate speech

  • Promoting or engaging in behavior that violates SMBA, Baseball Alberta, or Baseball Canada policies

  • Misrepresenting SMBA or spreading false information that could harm the association’s reputation

5. Discipline

Violations of this policy will be reviewed under the SMBA Discipline Policy and may result in warnings, suspensions, removal from the team, or further action at the discretion of the SMBA Board.
